USI Whole Home Smoke & CO Protection Contest - 01-2017
Carbon Monoxide Alarm Safety for the Home
This Universal Security Store smoke and carbon monoxide sweepstakes has ended, but home safety awareness remains important year-round. Carbon monoxide alarms help detect CO gas that cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, making them an essential part of a complete household safety plan.
Why Carbon Monoxide Alarms Matter
Carbon monoxide can come from fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, furnaces, water heaters, generators, attached garages, and other sources. Because CO is invisible and odorless, a working carbon monoxide alarm can provide important early warning when dangerous levels may be present.
Many homes benefit from using carbon monoxide alarms near sleeping areas and on multiple levels of the home. Depending on your home’s layout and installation needs, you may choose battery-operated, hardwired, or plug-in CO alarms.
Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms offer flexible placement and are useful for homes, apartments, dorms, and areas where hardwired installation is not available. They can be placed in key areas according to the product’s installation instructions.
Hardwired Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Hardwired carbon monoxide alarms are designed for homes with compatible wiring. These alarms are often used for permanent installations and may be a strong option when replacing existing wired-in CO alarms.
Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Plug-in carbon monoxide alarms are convenient for rooms with accessible outlets and are easy to install without wiring. Many plug-in models also include battery backup for added protection during power outages.
Choosing the Right Carbon Monoxide Alarm
The best carbon monoxide alarm type depends on your home, installation preferences, and where the alarm will be used. Battery-operated alarms are helpful for flexible placement, hardwired alarms are often used in homes with existing alarm wiring, and plug-in alarms offer a simple outlet-based option.
For better household coverage, review bedrooms, hallways, living spaces, basements, and areas near fuel-burning appliances. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement, testing, maintenance, and replacement.
