State of Maine New Natural Gas Detector Law - Is Your Home Up To Code?

Set to take place January 1st, 2022, the state of Maine's department of public safety will be introducing a new law that will require the installation of fuel/natural gas detectors. The new requirement indicates that natural gas alarms will have to be installed within rooms that feature a propane, natural gas or liquified petroleum gas fueled appliance. This law is centered on equipping properties with a proper means of identifying the presence of natural gas. It's essential as it has been estimated that the average American home uses at least one natural gas powered appliance daily. These can range from water heaters, furnaces, clothes dryers and ovens. Due to their widespread use, natural gas appliances will need to be accompanied by a natural gas alarm. The state has compiled a list of areas that will be required to implement a form of natural gas detection:

  • Each unit in any building of a multifamily occupancy

  • Fraternity houses, sorority houses or any dormitory that is affiliated with an educational facility

  • Children's homes, emergency children's shelters, children's residential care facilities, shelters for homeless children or specialized children's homes

  • Hotels, motels and inns

  • Mixed use occupancy that features a dwelling unit

  • Business occupancy

  • Mercantile occupancy

  • Assembly occupancy

It is a far reaching program that greatly exceeds just residential application. It's one that has been deemed necessary due to the threat imposed by undetected natural gas. During the course of a year, over a dozen deaths can be attributed to natural gas explosions. The number of injuries and hospitalizations is even greater with property damage exceeding the millions. The risks of not implementing a defense against natural gas can be severe and life altering. This is where Universal Security Instruments can service as a premier ally. Recognized for their reliable and intuitive technologies in smoke and fire safety, Universal Security Instruments also features a selection of natural gas alarms that fit the necessary criteria for this now in place law.

The new rule allows for some flexibility when it comes to the installation of natural gas detectors. Plug-In and Hardwired Natural Gas Alarms have received the green light for certification. Universal Security Natural Gas Alarms are available in both types and each bring their own advantages.

Universal Security Instruments Natural Gas Alarms: Protection Against Multiple Threats

A USI Plug-In Natural Gas Detector couldn't be any easier to incorporate. These compact gas detectors cover only one outlet when being used while doubling as a carbon monoxide alarm. Both plug-in natural gas detectors feature microprocessor intelligence that virtually eliminates nuisance alarms. This means you'll be alerted to actual dangers as opposed to random chirping that can be found in other alarms. Both also come equipped with a battery backup that will continue to operate the alarm's function in the event of a power outage.

USI Hardwired Natural Gas Detectors offer the same nuisance alarm detection and battery backup features. The availability of a hardwired 2-in-1 natural gas and carbon monoxide alarm ensures lasting protection from these two invisible and potentially lethal dangers. Enhanced peace of mind against additional dangers can be found in the USI Hardwired 4-in-1 Detector. This hardwired natural gas alarm is also capable of detecting smoke, fire and carbon monoxide, elevating it as an all in one selection. All four of these natural gas detectors fit the criteria for the soon to be set in places laws while servicing as an additional means of protection against other dangers.
